THE DEVIL'S MOUTH PODCAST Vol. 143: twelve rounds with Jim Coleman
Human Impact are about to hit Europe, so we sat down with the master manipulator of sound that is the great Jim Coleman
Human Impact have had, well, quite an impact ever since they appeared, shortly after the pandemic fucked everything up, including the overall reach of their self-titled debut album. Even still, a band built upon the core of Chris Spencer (Unsane) and Jim Coleman (Cop Shoot Cop) was always going to be a heavyweight no matter what, and fortunately they have weathered the plague years and come back even stronger than before. Now featuring a titanic new rhythm section, with Eric Cooper (Made Out Of Babies) and Jon Syverson (Daughters) accompanying the founders, they released ‘Gone Dark’, one of the very best albums of 2024, as dictated by, well, our TOP 30 ALBUMS list, for instance, as well as several other equally cool publications. Starting next month, the band is embarking on a significant tour of Europe, which includes an appearance at the prestigious Roadburn Festival. It’s time to go dark, people of Europe!
However, during our conversation with Jim, we focused not only on Human Impact, but on the entirety of his career. Though he’s very well known for being a crucial member of Cop Shoot Cop, the seminal ‘90s outfit that redefined both noise rock and industrial music with a sound that is still unmistakably their own (we did a Discography Deep Dive on them if you want to discover more), Jim is a reputed master creator and manipulator of sound. His career under his own name not only features various scores for independent cinema and television series, but also his projects whose releases, often including very interesting collaborators, vary in artist name from Phylr to filer coleman to actual Jim Coleman and range from electronic to drone to ambient music in style and scope. As filer coleman, for example, he released a fantastic album late last year by the name of ‘partial’ that we urge you to discover right now if you’re into ambient music:
It’s been a pleasure looking into the creative process of such a richly talented musician, as well as, naturally, hearing his rave about some of his favourite tracks. In fact, we love Jim so much we let him have twelve tracks instead of ten. Enjoy this great chat and this pile of fantastic left-field music, and let us know what you think in the comments as always!
