THE DEVIL'S MOUTH Vol. 106: Ten Rounds with Stefania Pedretti & Bruno Dorella (OvO)
Italian experimental duo are releasing their tenth studio album, 'Ignoto', and we celebrate it with some seriously awesome music.
At one point, during one of the many different and wonderfully engaging conversations we had with Stefania Pedretti and Bruno Dorella, the two fantastic artists that make up the (still, after all these years) mysterious and sinister experimental act OvO, the drummer confesses that, during these more advanced years of their trajectory, he has worried somewhat about two opposite scenarios: on one hand, that the band change too much from release to release for fans to keep up, or on the other, that they don’t change enough and people find them boring.
Honestly, if ever a band with these characteristics - shapeshifting, restless, truly experimental - has ever nailed that admittedly tricky balance, it’s OvO. When, after 22 years, ten albums and countless smaller releases, their uniquely wild mix of styles can still raise excitement as if it was a hungry debut, whether on record or during their explosive live shows, I believe that’s all the proof that’s needed. And of course, as Bruno also reminds us during the conversation with a laugh, it’s all done just with voice, guitar and drums.
'Ignoto', just recently released, the tenth full-length of their career, is the landmark we took as the perfect excuse to celebrate, and to invite both Stefania and Bruno to come and nerd out with us about other people's music and their own.
Throughout their wildly unpredictable and adventurous choices, which range in style from their punk and grind origins to skewed electro-pop, and everything else in between, we are constantly reminded that, at the heart of OvO (and the many other projects in which they're involved too, such as ?Alos, Ronin, Bachi Da Pietra, Sigillim S, GDG Modern Trio, Tiresia or Jack Cannon), lie two incredibly creative, talented and, despite the disorienting darkness in much their music, super nice artists.
