THE DEVIL'S MOUTH Vol. 150: ten rounds with Jarboe (part I)
Celebrating 150 episodes with our great lady, the "queen of unreality".
150 episodes! We just won’t give up and we’ve hit another nice round mark. What best way to celebrate it than this, a meeting with true royalty - the great Jarboe is our guest for this special episode, and to make it even more special, for the Ten Rounds, we had her pick ten of her own songs, so we get all the background, stories and insights that we’ve all dreamed about for this self-curated selection of her legendary career. Hey, if this is a dream, I hope the alarm clock is broken.
Throughout this wonderful conversation, we are taken on a journey of discovery through the different voices that Jarboe uses to present “the theatre of the song”, as she explain, an introduction to some of the main different characters and personas that come so vividly to life in these songs, and the different tonalities this uniquely talented singer employs for them to show their own personality. Apart from that, we also had a sneaky little preview about her finished forthcoming album, to be edited soon, called ‘Sightings’, as well as some of the very necessary reissues of her past work that The Circle Music has been doing for the past few years (with 2000s ‘Disburden Disciple’ being the latest).
Because of our host’s copyright rules, we cannot have more than a set number of songs from the same artist on each episode, so Vol. 150 with Jarboe will be split into three parts. You can now listen to the first one, which includes, among other topics, Jarboe’s insights into the songs ‘Mississippi’, ‘Forever’ (both from 1998’s ‘Anhedoniac’), ‘Troll Lullaby’ (from 1995’s ‘Sacrificial Cake’) and ‘Dear 666’, from the aforementioned ‘Disburden Disciple’. Parts II and III shall follow soon, we’ll keep you posted.
