Look at that picture, isn’t it beautiful? Can’t you just feel the cold, foggy breeze enveloping you just by staring at it for a couple of seconds? Well, if you’re in one of the many countries having a hellish, heat wave-ridden summer, you probably can’t, because all that you’re able to feel is unbearable heat and the constant trickle of your own sweat as soon as you wake up. The horrors of climate change will probably ensure this is the coldest summer of the rest of our lives too, so we’re essentially fucked.
So let’s at least listen to good music while we melt away, eh? For each of the ungodly (Celsius) degrees that have consumed us - yeah, it’s gotten to 40ºC and even above that for a few days, where I live - I picked a song to fight the rising temperature and long for better, colder days. It’s my first (of many, hopefully) playlist here on The Devil’s Mouth, but I still wanted to keep it breezy, pun obviously intended, so I didn’t put too much deep thought into it. I just added songs I love that either reference the cold in any way, in titles and/or lyrics or in less obvious ways, or that just feel absolutely fuckin’ cold musically and will chill you to your bones even if the weather isn’t really their main thematic concern.
Also, genres and musical frontiers be damned. I purposefully created contrasts and sudden direction changes, so it doesn’t “make sense” as a playlist should - it’s meant to startle you and catch you off guard. Obviously there’s a slight dominance of black metal over the rest, because if ever there was a weather-obsessed genre, goddamnit it’s that. But there’s plenty else to keep you hopefully entertained
I ran a poll of sorts the other day on my social media to see what format people would prefer to listen to this sort of thing on - obviously, “send me a C-90 tape in the mail” was the clear winner, but until you guys start to subscribe to this thing in serious numbers that won’t happen. Even if it started as a joke, it’s something I might really consider in the future. But for now, let’s keep it digital, and because I’m super accomodating, here are two different options, the most popular ones in that poll. First up, spotistuff:
Here’s the direct link for that too, if you prefer.
If you’d rather do Mixcloud, where we host our regular podcast as well, go ahead and click here. Unfortunately Substack doesn’t embed Mixcloud links yet. Please note the final track differs on the two platforms, because Wold are naturally too cool to have all of their albums on spotithings.
Here is the final track listing, too. Enjoy!
