Veil of Sound vs. The Devil's Mouth vol. III: The Quiet Room.
It's all gone a little quiet in here.
It’s all been a little intense, hasn’t it? The two first rounds of this awesome collaborative playlist project we’re developing with Veil of Sound - you know the deal by now, right? Every month The Devil’s Mouth offers a thematic playlist, VoS replies with their own, and we post each other’s on our websites - have all gone the way of violence so far, with a bunch of short outbursts for the initial presentation and just a whole pile of nasty hatred to follow that up on the second volume. Time to calm down a little, we thought, and so our third installment really went all out for quiet. Maybe not peace and quiet, because emotions are still running raw and rampant on most of these songs, but the sonic outlook of it at least is focused on less-is-more, quiet, often hushed undertones. Hell, a few of the songs on our list are even fully a capella. Go check it out at Veil of Sound right now and let us know your thoughts! Here’s also our usual chat nerding out about our lists, feel free to comment over there as well.
As usual, Thorsten from VoS totally vibed with our proposed mood, and his response playlist is full of a few of my own favourites, stuff like The Weakerthans, A Whisper In The Noise or Boysetsfire could easily have been on TDM’s, and above all Bohren & Der Club Of Gore, which kinda epitomise this whole mood and totally should have been on both. Speaking of being on both, because we have zero rules for this, there are even two artists that show up on both lists - the Thomas Feiner/Anywhen collab (seriously, jump on the ‘The Opiates’ album right now if you’re not familiar with it) and the sadly missed Jason Molina, under his own name on TDM and under Songs:Ohia on VoS. Great minds, etc. Enough talk, here’s music with VoS’ playlist. Check back next month for vol. IV!
