Can you blame us for being a little excited about the return of Young Widows? One of our favourite rock bands of all time, always treading the fine line between noise rock, post-punk and a few other genres you might name, always noisy and abrasive but also intensely emotional and down to earth, they’re one of those bands that you want to preserve at any cost because they should be held up as an example of how to do this whole thing. So when they spend eleven years without an album, it does sting a little bit. Sure, there were a few live shows, and Evan Patterson does Jaye Jayle, and bassist Nick Thieneman does Fool’s Gold and is also in Evan’s brother Ryan Patterson’s phenomenal Fotocrime, and all of these things are genuinely brilliant, but none of them occupy - nor should they - that little room in our hearts that only Young Widows have access to. So, that they have a new album out, ‘Power Sucker’ (out now!), and furthermore, that said album is a raw, full-on abrasive and exciting “we’re fucking alive and kicking” sort of statement is cause for great joy. So, after we tried to refresh everyone’s memories with the Discography Deep Dive into them the other day - which also included the first review of the new album -, we actually sat down with frontman Evan Patterson himself to talk about it. It was a great chat, as Evan got into the motivations and thoughts behind the return - turns out meetings at 10am on Fridays during the pandemic were much more productive than they might sound on paper -, as well as some priceless insights into his writing, the relationship between Young Widows and Jaye Jayle, future plans, and of course some cool details on some of the new songs. Like this one, of which Evan spoke at length, for example:
So, do yourself a favour - first of all, check out the new album, right here below, order yourself some nice vinyl, why not, and then check out our chat with the big man. You can play it up there as usual, it’s also on our Mixcloud, as well as Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Name your poison, but be sure to take it.
‘Power Sucker’ is out now on Temporary Residence.
You can find Young Widows on Bandcamp, Facebook, Instagram and Spotify.
