Colin is a beautiful old friend of The Devil’s Mouth - already five years ago, he was one of the first guests of our podcast, and he’s always a true gentleman when we go and pester him to talk about stuff. Right now it made sense to just give him a little call and chat away about the many things that he has going on. First and foremost, because it’s currently the main thing in the “mothership” Amenra’s trajectory, the two brand new EPs, ‘De Toorn’ and ‘With Fang And Claw’, showcasing two very different sides to the band. Just so you can compare, here’s a video from a ‘With Fang And Claw’ song:
…and one from ‘De Toorn’:
We talked to Colin about this starking contrast, two releases which, as it turned out, were the last ones featuring now former bassist Tim De Gieter. As we joke during the chat, there’s a little Spinal Tap-ian curse around that position, but if someone is able to break it, it’ll be their already announced new and badass four-string wielder, Amy Tung Barrysmith. Who, incidentally, also has a great new album out with her band Year Of The Cobra, check it out.
Oh, and then there’s also this little thing. Released late last year, ‘Sober Maal’ was the first chapter of hopefully a few more to come of a collaboration between Colin and Dutch folk legend Tonnie Dieleman, aka Broeder Dieleman. It’s an achingly beautiful record, able to transcend cultural and linguistic barriers, and it was a pleasure discussing the details of this partnership - which will be on full display with a special show at Roadburn in a few weeks - with our guest.
All of this, plus a glimpse of the future plans for Colin and Amenra - a nice update between two friends sitting down for a chat. Listen to the conversation now right up there on this post, or on your favourite platform: Mixcloud, Spotify, Apple.
‘De Toorn’, ‘With Fang And Claw’ and ‘Sober Maal’ are all out now out via Relapse Records.
