If you’re a regular reader of this here hovel, you might remember Swedish singer/songwriter Christian Kjellvander’s last album, 2023’s ‘Hold Your Love Still’, kinda made a mess of my heart when it came out, and it was still firmly taking up residence down there later, when I assembled my list of favourites from that year. To be perfectly honest, it’s made a permanent home of itself in that cold black little dead vital organ of mine, so it was a delight to know about Christian’s latest tour down here in the Southernmost parts of Europe where I’m from. Before going for an all-out ten rounds episode with the gentleman - that’s promised for when the new album is closer, something which we discuss in the chat - we thought it’d be cool to have a sort of quick check-in from the road, so with still a fair number of dates in his current show agenda (Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany and The Netherlands pay attention now, as well as Sweden, Norway and Denmark in May!), we rang him up, quite literally, on the road, as he made a little pit stop on a highway in Italy to update us on what’s been going on.
Turns out we found him in good spirits, the shows having gone down really well so far with the new trio line-up he’s been testing out, and excited about what’s to come next, be it the remaining shows of the tour, and also the recording of the new album with these two musicians currently accompanying him on the road. We still don’t know much about the new stuff, though a couple of new songs have been aired at the shows, but we did manage to coax out of the soft-spoken Swede that the initial idea would be for it to be a “quiet” record. We’ll see!
In the meantime, check out this cool chat, either up there or on your favourite platform (Mixcloud, Spotify, Apple), and do attend a show if it’s near you. It’s an experience you won’t forget. The Devil’s Mouth will be at the Porto show and we shall naturally report accordingly.
‘Hold Your Love Still’ is out via Tapete Records.
You can find Christian Kjellvander on Bandcamp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and Spotify.
